Image

Image
Below is the slide from this meeting "การประชุม เรื่อง “ยุทธศาสตร์ด้านการวิจัยมหาวิทยาลัยมหิดลเพื่อมุ่งสู่ Real World Impact” วันพฤหัสบดีที่ 17 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2567 เวลา 09.30 – 11.30 น. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1hbqWH9of26DWBc0YtFtRntZ25aj8-T8X/view It is pretty cool that Gemini can inform you on the directions of research environment management.  Q: The image displays "The World University Rankings 2025" with a section highlighted in red, specifically focusing on "2 Research Environment" and "3 Research Quality." Research Environment "Research Environment" is one of the pillars used in the university ranking, carrying a weighting of 29%. This pillar likely assesses factors that contribute to a university's ability to conduct high-quality research, such as: Research infrastructure: Access to state-of-the-art laboratories, equipment, and resources. Funding and investment: The level of financial support for research activities. Re...

[Recommend to Read] A Postdoctoral Training Program in Bioimage Analysis

Image
I cannot download the full text, but the pre-prine version is freely available. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11118354/ The tenure track is very limited, thus generating a post-doc crisis in which the majority cannot compete for the tenure track. They are looking for alternative career paths and focusing in-depth on their technical skill sets. Consequently, the group launched post-doc training on bioimage analysis, where this technique becomes more important in several industries as well as in academic environments, like core facilities. As of now, I don't see a real core facility in Thailand, only the custodians who take care of instruments but don't have in-depth knowledge of the technical part as well as data analysis related to the particular instruments.

Latest article related to publishing microscope image data

A very good suggested guideline article for publishing microscope image data: check out Nature Method. Community-developed checklists for publishing images and image analyses https://www.nature.com/articles/s41592-023-01987-9 As of now, our facility still lacks "Quality Assessment and Reproducibility for Instruments & Images in Light Microscopy (QUAREP-LiMi)" , and I don't see any support from any leader at any level so far --- yet, the University would like us to have good quality research. As I have asked the distributors (4 distributors -- Nikon, Leica, Olympus, and ZEISS), none of them have known this issue, and the specialists lack the program to initiate it. This is because it has costs, and they don't know whether each central facility in each University would like to have this. If no customer, it is worthless for them to initiate this service, thus the core must do it by itself, and it requires skilled personnel and financial support. Old blogs related to ...

Why building safety culture?

Image
This is a great video worth watching and learning from.  Ref: https://www.molbiolcell.org/doi/10.1091/mbc.E20-03-0167 Research Center Safety Website: https://sites.google.com/site/rclabsafety/ It is kind of awkward a bit that we don't have an official website. I have made it by myself for the sake of introducing a safety culture to the research center!

How to effectively run core facility?

Image
We read a lot of research papers but we do not pay attention that much to infrastructure management, especially core facilities. Actually, there are several papers or articles published recently on how to run core effectively and how good facility management helps on research productivity and reproducibility. Scopus search ~ keyword: core facility management; many good articles listed by scanning the QR code below

Expert in core facility

A good article that should be read for the person who would like to have a good core facility and reproducibility in research. I rarely see (here) the executive board paying attention to this but rather focusing on a number of publications, just for climbing the ranking - building the house of card? https://www.cell.com/trends/cell-biology/fulltext/S0962-8924(20)30119-7?dgcid=raven_jbs_etoc_email#back-bb0035 doi:  10.1016/j.tcb.2020.06.001 The main structure - The author also has the micro-courses on the microscope.
